Valentine Love Poem My True Love Hath My Heart |
My True Love Hath My Heart
|
My true-love hath my heart and I have his,
By just exchange one for the other given;
I hold his dear and mine he cannot miss;
There never was a better bargain driven.
My true-love hath my heart and I have his,
His heart in me keeps him and me in one;
My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides;
He loves my heart for once it was his own,
I cherish his because in me it bides.
My true-love hath my heart and I have his.

Written from the viewpoint (POV) of a woman, Sir Philip Sidney wrote this poem, "My True Love Hath My Heart,"
in an unusual form for the day (1554–1586) when writing was not generally done from the perspective of the opposite sex.
In this particular poem, perfect for Valentine's Day, Sidney attempts to express the strength of love - not just
a simple feeling but a loss of one's heart, the essense of the loving self, to the other.
The heart of the lover, residing in the other, guides and moderates the feelings and thoughts of its keeper.
