Gustave Flaubert to Louise Colet
August 15, 1846
|
I will cover you with love when next I see you, with caresses, with
ecstasy.
I want to gorge you with all the joys of the flesh, so that
you faint and die.
I want you to be amazed by me, and to confess to
yourself that you had never even dreamed of such transports...
When
you are old, I want you to recall those few hours, I want your dry
bones to quiver with joy when you think of them.

Gustav Flaubert, famed author of famed novel "Madame Bovary" met Louise Colet
at a sculptor's studio in Paris. It was a fateful day for the young writer. Louise Colet, a well-known poet and a great beauty, happened to be posing for the sculptor that day.
Flaubert fell into a tumultuous, ill-starred affair that is now one of the most celebrated in literary history. Colet was to be the recipient of some of Flaubert's most important letters, and they form a particularly fascinating record of his tortuous struggles with Madame Bovary, on which he labored for five years.
He did have other love affairs, but they were never central to his life; most important were his stormy affairs with the poet Louise Colet in 1846-1847 and again in 1851-1854 and his affectionate relationship with Juliet Herbert, the governess of his niece, which began in the mid-1850s and lasted to the end of his life.
